What does the imagery of The Fool mean?
The Fool steps off a cliff in parti-colored motley, white rose in one hand and a bindle on a staff over his shoulder, while a small white dog yaps at his heels. Behind him rise snow-capped mountains beneath a radiant yellow sky, and his gaze lifts upward rather than toward the drop. These details picture innocent faith, untethered beginnings, and the leap of spirit before experience—freedom that ignores danger yet trusts the journey.
From the source
"With light step, as if earth and its trammels had little power to restrain him, a young man in gorgeous vestments pauses at the brink of a precipice among the great heights of the world; he surveys the blue distance before him—its expanse of sky rather than the prospect below. His act of eager walking is still indicated, though he is stationary at the given moment; his dog is still bounding."
— A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911) (public domain)
What does The Fool mean as feelings?
UprightWhen The Fool governs feelings, there's lighthearted excitement, curiosity, and a willingness to leap without guarantees. They feel unburdened and open, eager to begin something new with you. Behaviorally, they're spontaneous, playful, and a little impulsive—initiating adventures, saying yes quickly, and avoiding heavy commitment talk.
ReversedReversed, feelings turn restless or reckless. They may feel anxious, scattered, or unsure whether they're ready, masking doubt with impulsiveness or pulling back suddenly. Behaviorally, they act flighty, break plans, avoid responsibility, or treat the connection as an experiment—enthusiasm without follow-through, or fear disguised as carefree distance.
