Can ChatGPT Do a Tarot Reading? How to Ask — and When a Dedicated AI Tarot Helps
How to use ChatGPT for tarot (copy-paste prompts), what to watch out for, and when a dedicated AI tarot tool is the better fit.
Can ChatGPT read tarot?
Yes. More and more people talk through their worries with ChatGPT and ask it to answer as a tarot reader. In a 2026 survey by Japan's cocoloni, 33.9% of respondents aged 20–50 said they had used ChatGPT or another AI for fortune-telling (figures as published by the surveyor).
One caveat: if you only type “draw a card for me”, the card is whatever the AI picks — you can't tell whether it was really random. For a reading you want to take seriously, draw the cards yourself first, then ask the AI to help interpret them.
Three prompts you can copy
1) Interpret cards you drew: “I drew three tarot cards: Past — ___ (upright), Present — ___ (reversed), Future — ___ (upright). My question is ‘___’. Using traditional Rider-Waite meanings, interpret each position and end with one thing I can do this week.”
2) Sharpen your question: “My worry is ___. Rephrase it as a specific, forward-looking question that works well for tarot.”
3) Learn a card: “Explain The Tower upright and reversed in love, work and money.”
Three things to watch out for
1. Randomness: draw yourself or use a tool that actually shuffles, instead of letting the AI “think of” a card.
2. Don't treat it as certainty: tarot isn't for predicting dates, illnesses, exam scores or court outcomes — however confident the AI sounds.
3. Privacy: avoid real names, other people's contact details or anything that identifies someone.
When a dedicated AI tarot helps
Dedicated tools like Tarot Baby shuffle a real 78-card deck and let you draw the cards yourself. Your cards stay on screen and in your history, and the reading is built on spread positions, reversals and elemental combinations. You can ask follow-ups, and a few days later look back at how it actually turned out — tarot as a practice you can keep, not a one-off chat.
If you want a long heart-to-heart, or you've already drawn physical cards and just want help going deeper, ChatGPT works well too. Pick the tool that fits what you need.
In short
You can enjoy tarot with ChatGPT. Draw the cards yourself, ask a specific question, and don't treat the answer as final. Tarot doesn't decide for you — it's a mirror to help you sort out how you feel. The decision is always yours.
