Iconographic reading

Justice sits enthroned between two gray pillars, crowned and cloaked in red, gripping an upright sword in her right hand and balanced scales in her left. The purple veil behind her echoes the mysteries of impartial law, while her steady frontal gaze and square throne imply firm, reasoned judgment rather than mercy. Sword and scales together map the card's meaning: cause weighed, then consequence decisively enacted.

From the source

"As this card follows the traditional symbolism and carries above all its obvious meanings, there is little to say regarding it outside the few considerations collected in the first part, to which the reader is referred. It will be seen, however, that the figure is seated between pillars, like the High Priestess, and on this account it seems desirable to indicate that the moral principle which deals unto every man according to his works—while, of course, it is in strict analogy with higher things—differs in its essence from the spiritual justice which is involved in the idea of election."

— A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911) (public domain)

As feelings

UprightWhen Justice upright represents feelings, the person feels clear-eyed, fair, and accountable. They weigh pros and cons, seek balance, and want honesty and reciprocity. Affection is steady but measured; they may discuss commitments, boundaries, or consequences rather than gush. They act with integrity, keep promises, and expect the same in return.

ReversedWhen Justice reversed represents feelings, the person feels unfairly treated, resentful, or avoidant of accountability. They may rationalize, deflect blame, or stay in a situation out of obligation rather than desire. Emotions swing between cold detachment and simmering grievance; they withhold honesty, dodge difficult conversations, and resist making things right.

🜲 Reversed

Reversed, something is out of balance: an unfair deal, a avoided truth, or self-deception. Face the facts squarely before they face you.

FAQ

What does Justice upright mean?

The core upright keyword is "fairness" — this energy is flowing naturally in your situation right now.

Is Justice reversed a bad card?

Reversed is not a bad outcome; it signals energy turned inward or blocked, with the key "bias". Settling things before acting is the starting point.

What is this card's Yes/No leaning?

Upright leans YES, reversed leans NO. For a formal verdict use the 3-card Yes/No tarot, reasoning included.

Can tarot answer specific dates?

Tarot reflects "the current flow and options" better than exact dates. For timing, ask "how much longer should I wait" instead.
